The existing Corona Del Mar Fire Station No. 5 and the Corona Del Mar Branch Library went into service separately approximately sixty years ago. Both of these buildings have exceeded their intended service life and need to be replaced.
The Project Team (City staff and WLC Architects (WLC)) met with the Community numerous times over the past several months to fine-tune the numerous conceptual designs. Upon selecting a final design by the Library Board of Trustees and obtaining approval from the City Council earlier this year, WLC has been busy preparing the final construction plans and contract documents.
The Fire Station Crew/Operations relocation to the City parking lot at the northwest corner of 5th Avenue and Marguerite Avenue (across the street from the OASIS Community Center) and the start of substantial construction will likely begin in early 2017, for a 12-14 months construction period.
The City contracted with WLC Architects (WLC) on March 24, 2015 for design and construction document preparation for the new Corona Del Mar Library and Fire Station. The Design Team has met with the building users and implemented the received comments and ideas into the preferred floor plan:
Option D4* - Recommended by the Board of Library Trustees on October 19, 2015 and November 16, 2015. Approved by City Council on November 24, 2015.
Rendering 3 - Recommended by the Board of Library Trustees on October 19, 2015 and November 16, 2015. Approved by City Council on November 24, 2015.
WLC Architects, Library and Public Works staff (the Design Team) are continuing to work on preliminary layouts and have generated several different layouts for consideration. The D-series options are receiving the most favorable responses from the Board and the community. However, a preferred layout has not been approved at this time. WLC is also developing exterior rendering concepts, with an emphasis of incorporating a balanced neighborhood architectural theme into the building façade. Final City Council approval of the preliminary layout and renderings was approved on November 24, 2015.

The project was bid during December of 2017 and January 2018. On February 8, 2018, the City received a low bid of $6,724,186 from TELACU Construction Management Inc.
Relocation and construction is underway in February and March of 2018, and construction is expected to begin in April 2018. Construction will require 12 to 14 months to complete.
